The world is now one step closer to a legitimate Hollywood adaptation of a Dean Koontz novel. Of the fifteen or so that have reached the screen only two, Demon Seed and Phantoms, came from anything resembling a major studio/distributor. The rest have been a mixed bag of TV movies, mini-series, and direct-to-DVD releases. But there are currently two films in pre-production that hold great promise for fans of the author’s many novels screaming to be turned into feature films. Director Ole Bornedal is set to direct The Husband for Focus Features, but there’s been little movement there since the announcement two years ago. And Universal Pictures is planning on releasing Stephen Sommers’ film version of Odd Thomas.
Bringing Odd Thomas closer to reality is the recent announcement that Anton Yelchin will be starring in the title role. Yelchin was last seen in 2009′s one-two punch of Star Trek and Terminator Salvation, and while he was out of sight throughout 2010 the next two years look to be even busier for the young actor. In addition to the recent Sundance hit Like Crazy and the remake of Fright Night, he’ll next be seen in Jodie Foster’s The Beaver. Per IMDB he has an additional three films lined up through 2012 as well, so we’ll have to wait and see where Odd Thomas fits into it all.
Hopefully it will be soon though, as Odd is a fascinating character who has managed to remain interesting through four novels. The first is still the best and introduces Odd as a young fry cook in a small mid-western town where he lives alongside his friends and the ghost of Elvis Presley. He can see and speak to the dead, although they don’t talk back, and he uses his gifts to help them find out what’s holding them back from moving on to the afterlife. The sequels vary in quality, but Odd Thomas is pitch perfect in character, tone, humor, emotion, and suspense. http://www.filmschoolrejects.com/news....mas.php

State economic development officials say production in Santa Fe and Albuquerque is slated to begin in early May and last through July 15.
Based on a novel by Dean Koontz, "Odd Thomas" tells the story of a short-order cook with mystical abilities who encounters a mysterious man with a link to dark, threatening forces. He will have to save his friends, his town and the girl he loves to uncover the truth.
The cast includes Anton Yelchin, who starred in "Star Trek" and "Charlie Bartlett."

The 22-year-old actress has been offered the role of Stormy Llewellyn in Odd Thomas, Variety reports.
The project, based off the book by Dean Koontz and also starring Anton Yelchin, follows the Thomas, a young short-order cook who’s able to see the dead, who encounters a mysterious man he suspects may be involved in an upcoming atrocity. Stormy is his girlfriend, and is the only person who knows the true extent of his abilities.
Anton Yelchin will star in an upcoming Stephen Sommers adaptation of Dean Koontz’ novel titled Odd Thomas.
Yelchin will be taking on the title role of a 20-year-old fry-cook who can see ghosts and at this moment still no word on when filming might begin, or any other cast additions.
But we do know that Sommers is in pre-production on the project, and we’re here to share some details about Koontz’ novel, so check the rest of this report.
“Odd Thomas, who narrates, is odd indeed: only 20, he works contentedly as a fry cook in a small fictional California town, despite a talent for writing. The reason for his lack of ambition?
A much rarer talent: Odd sees and converses with ghosts, the lingering dead who have yet to pass on, a secret he has kept from nearly everyone but his girlfriend, an eccentric author friend and the local police chief, whom he occasionally helps solve terrible crimes.

According to our buds over at Bloody Disgusting Tim Robbins (pictured right; The Shawshank Redemption, War of the Worlds) is also circling a role in Sommers' upcoming flick. As reported earlier Emma Roberts (Scream 4), Lily Collins (Priest), Kat Dennings, Portia Doubleday, and Addison Timlin are on the shortlist to play the character of "Stormy Llewellyn," the girlfriend of the title character in "Odd Thomas" (Anton Yelchin).
In the books Odd Thomas is silently approached by the ghost of a young girl brutally raped and murdered, and through his unique ability to understand the dead, he is psychically led to her killer, a former schoolmate named Harlo Landerson. With this opening, we are introduced to Odd's world. Koontz soon discloses how Odd was named and begins, layer by layer, to show how Odd's dysfunctional upbringing has shaped his life; and as those details are uncovered, his supernatural abilities begin to make more sense.

Odd Thomas is scheduled to start filming on May 2 in Santa Fe, NM.

Actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw ("Undercovers") is the latest to board Stephen Sommer's adaptation of Odd Thomas, based on Dean Koontz series. Variety reports that Raw's role is unspecified at the moment though she joins the previously-confirmed stars Anton Yelchin, Addison Timlin and Patton Oswalt. Willem Dafoe and Nico Tortorella have also been rumors as taking on roles but they have yet to be confirmed. Sommers penned the screenplay and will direct.
Plot Concept: The Dean Koontz character centers on a clairvoyant (Yelchin) with the power to see (but not hear) the dead, for three subsequent books, "Forever Odd," "Brother Odd" and "Odd Hours," as well as for two graphic novels. Seems that the cast for Odd Thomas has been more or less rounded out. Anton Yelchin stars as the short order cook who can see paranormal things. Addison Timlin is the love interest and apparently Willem Dafoe will the be the mentor police chief. And now we can add Nico Tortorella to the mix as the bad guy. Throw in some up-andcoming comic actor for the best friend role and we’re good to go!
Tortorella joins the Stephen Sommers directed Thomas after appearing in this week’s Scream 4 as Emma Robert’s ex-boyfriend. But let’s be honest here: you best remember him from Make It or Break It, the riveting show about... gymnastics which featured this amazing, amazing scene. Seriously, you cannot find a more unbelievable scene than that. It should be preserved in the television history books (a book for television? Um, okay) so future generations can experience it.
